Studio Printmakers' Collective

Val Cuthbert

Printmaking has been an important part of my life for over 12 years since I first discovered etching, and then joined the printmaking class at Mairangi Arts Centre to find out more about it. From etching zinc I moved to drypoint, lino, lithography and mixed media, finding that the image always decides which printing technique is most suitable.

I've always looked to my surroundings here in New Zealand for my inspiration, and there is so much to choose from – birds, native plants, wonderful landscapes.

I choose to be a realist and I like somehow to tell a story through the images, which might simply be to show how beautiful something is.

Recently I've had the opportunity to share my passion for printmaking by teaching the basics at Estuary Arts Centre, Orewa, where this year new studios have been opened, a press installed, and the beginnings of a Hibiscus printmaking group established.
